The other day I overheard a friend call me an interior decorator. Gasp! It’s not really a huge deal, but it does go to show how many people, even people who know me well, misunderstand the differences between an interior designer and an interior decorator.

What is an Interior Decorator?

An interior decorator focuses entirely on the aesthetics of a space using carefully chosen furniture, colors, textiles, textures, and beautiful accessories to express the personality of a client. No official training or licensure is required for a person to become an interior decorator.

What is an Interior Designer?

An interior designer on the other hand goes beyond aesthetics to focus on the functionality, usability, and safety of a space by understanding human behavior and how a room will be used. They must be trained to create and use technical designs that adhere to codes and regulations and encourage environmental sustainability. Because of the technical side of interior design versus interior decorating, interior designers need official training, licensure or registration, and continuing education.

Which is best for you?

difference between interior designer and decorator

Whether you should hire an interior decorator or designer depends entirely on your project. Are you removing a wall, moving plumbing, or installing cabinets, doors, or windows? An interior designer would be your biggest help. Are you simply choosing wallpaper, paint color, lighting, or furnishings? An interior decorator would be your best choice. Decide who to hire based on your needs and their qualifications.

Hiring the best professionals for your plans and budget will save you time, money, and unnecessary stress so you can enjoy the process from beginning to beautiful end!

An Interior Designer Must Have:
